Leadership Team

  • Karl Schoene

    CEO

    Karl Schoene is the CEO and a board member of Elevance Renewable Sciences.  Karl brings leadership and diverse experience across the chemicals, renewable energy and related process industries, most recently serving as president and Chief Technology Officer of Elevance. He has been instrumental in unifying the technical and business development activities across the company.

    Previously he was president and CEO of Accutest Laboratories; president, COO and CEO of InEnTec; and held several positions at AkzoNobel, including vice president and global SBU manager, general manager and global business manager in organometallic specialties, polymer chemicals and agriculture applications. During his 25-year career, Karl has also held executive leadership, management and R&D positions at Crompton, Witco, Amoco, Albemarle and Ethyl.

    Karl earned both his B.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Virginia.

  • Chad Tate

    Chief Financial Officer

    Chad has more than 20 years of experience in finance and administration from diverse industries including analytical testing, life sciences, logistics and software development.  Prior to joining Elevance, Chad was the Director of Finance for Environmental Health and Safety, US Division, at SGS North America and previously held several positions at Accutest Laboratories, including Chief Financial Officer and Chief Accounting Officer.

    Chad is a CPA, and earned his B.S. degree in accounting from Salisbury University.

  • Rusty Pittman

    VP of Marketing and Business Development

    Rusty has more than 15 years of marketing and business development experience working in a diverse range of industries including specialty chemicals, oil and gas process and catalyst technologies, building materials, and renewable energy. As VP of Marketing and Business Development at Elevance, he actively works to promote Elevance products and technologies with a focus on securing collaborations with other specialty chemical companies to leverage the company’s unique bio-based, chemical building blocks. Prior to Elevance Rusty led marketing, product management and business development teams at James Hardie Building Products, BASF, UOP (a subsidiary of Honeywell) and SolarWorld. Rusty began his career in technology development where he led technical teams to development new process and catalyst technologies for the oil and gas industry at UOP.

    Rusty has an MBA from Kellogg Management School of Business, a M.S. in chemical engineering from Berkeley, and a B.S. in chemistry from New Mexico State University.

  • Mary Bjorklund

    VP of Technology & Engineering

    Mary Bjorklund has more than 25 years of experience in the chemical industry including process development, design, operation and optimization of manufacturing plants.  Since joining Elevance in 2009, Mary led the effort for the successful design and operation of the first Elevance Biorefinery in Gresik, Indonesia.  In her current role, Mary leads all aspects of the technical organization including Research, Process Development, and Engineering.

    Mary has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and previously held roles in Research, Manufacturing, and Engineering at Amoco, BP and Flint Hills Resources.

  • Sharon Fitzpatrick

    VP, Human Capital

    Sharon has more than 25 years of human resource and management experience working in a diverse range of companies including retail, communications, manufacturing, transportation, pharma and technology. Prior to joining Elevance, she most recently ran a successful Human Capital Consulting and Recruiting business. As Senior VP of Human Resources for Durham School Services, she collaborated with the executive team to set the vision, strategic direction and performance objectives for the company as it relocated its headquarters. Earlier in her career she joined Aerial Communications in its start-up phase and worked to develop the HR and Talent practices supporting workforce and succession planning, leadership development, compensation, benefits, performance management, employee relations and HR Systems necessary for the company’s rapid growth. As it was acquired by T-Mobile, she was a leader in merging the HR processes, procedures and cultural aspects of the two companies.

    Sharon has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration-Management with a concentration in union-management relations/human resources from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has Senior Professional Human Resource and SHRM – Senior Certified Professional certifications.

  • Lloyd Chatfield

    General Counsel

    Lloyd has nearly 25 years of experience acting as inside and outside counsel to a number of global companies, primarily in the specialty chemicals, manufacturing and consumer products sectors.  As General Counsel, Lloyd is responsible for overseeing Elevance’s global legal affairs, including strategic commercial relationships, regulatory affairs and corporate matters.  Prior to joining Elevance, Lloyd was General Counsel for Brunswick Corporation and a number of its subsidiaries, and is the principal of the Chatfield Law Offices, which serves as outside general counsel for a number of small and mid-size companies.

    Lloyd is licensed to practice law in Illinois and Kentucky, and holds a JD from the University of Kentucky College of Law and a BA from the University of Tampa.
